Birkmyre’s winning streak came to an end on Saturday in a defeat to Waysiders by 38 points to 14. Despite opening the scoring, the Inverclyde side saw the match slip away having been reduced late on to 14 players.

The action was concentrated in the middle third for the first 5 minutes before the home side squandered a good opportunity from a 5m penalty. Persistence paid off however, and Full Back, Paul Carruth, went over for the opening score 12 minutes in. Defending a line out only 5m from their own try line, Birkmyre stole the ball and used their backs to progress across the 22. Ross Moglia, having carried to just short of the halfway line, kicked the ball deep into opposition territory. Carruth then turned on the gas to beat the defenders and touch down close to the posts. Jonny Davidson converted.

Birkmyre’s lead was fairly short lived. On the 20th minute, Waysiders set up a maul from a 5m penalty and rumbled over for a converted score to level things up. They then took the lead on the 28th minute, choosing to kick a penalty in front of the post before bringing the half to a close with a further converted try a minute before the whistle.

Birkmyre felt confident they could turn things around with the wind advantage in the second half and there was no change to the score line during the early passages of play. However, things began to unwind on the 57th minute when Fergus Young received a yellow card in a case of mistaken identity. From the resulting penalty, Waysiders extended their lead with their 3rd try.

Shortly after, Birkmyre were reduced to 13 when Angus Rintoul was harshly yellow carded for and early tackle on the jumper in a line out. The visitors used the player advantage to score again.

From the resulting kick off, Birkmyre got a score back. The home side won a penalty on the 22. Choosing to tap & go, the forwards drove 5m down the pitch. They then switched to the backs and Struan McCamley cut a great line, breaking a couple of tackles to score under the posts.
Waysiders were then reduced to 14 players with a yellow card of their own, however on the 75th minute, they scored their final try in part due to some poor tackling by the home side.

The drama was not over however, as with 3 minutes left on the clock, Angus Rintoul received another very soft yellow card which resulted in it being upgraded to red. Birkmyre now head into the Autumn break in 5th place in the league with competitive action scheduled to return on November 23rd.
